African American Mental Health Educational Presentation
Stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to treatment. The average delay between the onset of mental health symptoms and treatment is 8 to 10 years.
Over 7 million Black/African Americans in the U.S. experience mental illness each year—but only 1 in 3 receive care. Stigma, systemic barriers, and lack of culturally competent services continue to impact access and quality of care.
Join us to hear from community members about lived experiences, coping strategies, self-care, and available resources. Trained individuals living in recovery lead a comprehensive and interactive, presentation about the reality of living with mental illness. At the end, there is an opportunity to ask questions.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals living with a mental health condition and their families. At the heart of NAMI San Francisco's mission is sharing information on treatment and recovery and striving to end the stigma associated with mental illness. To this end, we offer a Helpline, support groups, educational classes, and public presentations—at no cost to participants.
